Chapter 12
This was the bond talkingâthe one that would drive him to literal insanity.
I needed to calm him down, to stop its power over him. If his emotions were anything like mineâand I knew they wereâthen he felt an unhealthy level of possessiveness. To counteract it, Iâd need⦠to show him that I was his.
How the hell would I do that?
I mean, sure. I could think of a dozen ways to do it sexually, off the top of my head. But he wasnât attracted to me, and Rollenâs warning about that still rang pretty loudly in my head. I couldnât just jump into sex with him lightly. It wouldnât be a one-time romp in the hay or loosening-up kind of thing. It would change our relationship, probably permanently.
Still trying to come up with an idea, I stood up and wedged myself between Auden and the sink. He didnât make any space for me, but I didnât ask him to.
I remembered him putting my hands on his face when heâd asked me to trust him, so I put them on his cheeks.
âJust breathe, okay? Iâm right here.â
His chest heaved, his veins still bulging. Nothing seemed to change.
The hands-on-the-face-thing wasnât working.
New plan.
I reversed our position, grabbing his hands and lifting them to my face. His gigantic hands were in fists until I lifted them to my cheeks, and then they opened and cupped my skin.
A shuddering breath escaped him, his chest still heaving.
âI need you to trust me, Auden,â I told him, my voice and eyes steady as I stared up at him. âI told you about the family I came from. I told you what kind of person I am. You have to trust that I wonât cheat on you. That I have no intention of being anyone elseâs. Itâs you and me and twelve cats, until the end.â
A strangled bark-laugh escaped him. âTwelve cats?â
âYes. Theyâre in my ten-year plan.â I paused. âI donât like the way they get hair on everything though, so weâll need the hairless variety. Unless Iâm still allergic to them; then weâll have to come up with something else.â
He made that noise again, and my lips curved up slightly.
âLetâs make a deal, okay?â
He made a noncommittal noise, and I grinned.
âYou can reset any fae who touches me, alright? Or any fae that I touchâexcept your friends, because I might need them to fly me places sometimes. I wonât judge you, or be angry, or freak out or anything. They touch me, or I touch them, you just reset them and call it good. None of this needed.â I poked one of the veins in his neck.
Another bark-laugh left him. âThatâs not going to solve my issues here.â
âWhat would, then?â
His eyes squeezed shut. âI have no idea.â
âWhat would make you believe me?â I pressed. âHuman women wear rings to say theyâre married; would that help?â
âNo.â
âI could get a tattoo with your face on it on my left tit,â I suggested.
I definitely wouldnâtâhis face was gorgeous, but I wasnât putting a tattoo of it on my body anywhere.
