Chapter 12

This was the bond talking—the one that would drive him to literal insanity.

I needed to calm him down, to stop its power over him. If his emotions were anything like mine—and I knew they were—then he felt an unhealthy level of possessiveness. To counteract it, I’d need… to show him that I was his.

How the hell would I do that?

I mean, sure. I could think of a dozen ways to do it sexually, off the top of my head. But he wasn’t attracted to me, and Rollen’s warning about that still rang pretty loudly in my head. I couldn’t just jump into sex with him lightly. It wouldn’t be a one-time romp in the hay or loosening-up kind of thing. It would change our relationship, probably permanently.

Still trying to come up with an idea, I stood up and wedged myself between Auden and the sink. He didn’t make any space for me, but I didn’t ask him to.

I remembered him putting my hands on his face when he’d asked me to trust him, so I put them on his cheeks.

“Just breathe, okay? I’m right here.”

His chest heaved, his veins still bulging. Nothing seemed to change.

The hands-on-the-face-thing wasn’t working.

New plan.

I reversed our position, grabbing his hands and lifting them to my face. His gigantic hands were in fists until I lifted them to my cheeks, and then they opened and cupped my skin.

A shuddering breath escaped him, his chest still heaving.

“I need you to trust me, Auden,” I told him, my voice and eyes steady as I stared up at him. “I told you about the family I came from. I told you what kind of person I am. You have to trust that I won’t cheat on you. That I have no intention of being anyone else’s. It’s you and me and twelve cats, until the end.”

A strangled bark-laugh escaped him. “Twelve cats?”

“Yes. They’re in my ten-year plan.” I paused. “I don’t like the way they get hair on everything though, so we’ll need the hairless variety. Unless I’m still allergic to them; then we’ll have to come up with something else.”

He made that noise again, and my lips curved up slightly.

“Let’s make a deal, okay?”

He made a noncommittal noise, and I grinned.

“You can reset any fae who touches me, alright? Or any fae that I touch—except your friends, because I might need them to fly me places sometimes. I won’t judge you, or be angry, or freak out or anything. They touch me, or I touch them, you just reset them and call it good. None of this needed.” I poked one of the veins in his neck.

Another bark-laugh left him. “That’s not going to solve my issues here.”

“What would, then?”

His eyes squeezed shut. “I have no idea.”

“What would make you believe me?” I pressed. “Human women wear rings to say they’re married; would that help?”

“No.”

“I could get a tattoo with your face on it on my left tit,” I suggested.

I definitely wouldn’t—his face was gorgeous, but I wasn’t putting a tattoo of it on my body anywhere.
